WILD KNITTING LACE SHAWL

This shawl was knit with a Merino/Alpaca blend lace yarn hand dyed with cochenille (see earlier post). I used 5mm needles to achieve a nice drape and lightness of fabric.

BLANKET FOR JUSTUS

This is my first project after the Rigid Heddle Course with Glynis Brook here in Wilderness in December. A new Baby in the family was an opportunity to weave a blanket. (No, I'm not a grandma... yet?)

Dies ist das erste Projekt nach dem Webkurs mit Glynis Brook hier in Wilderness im Dezember 2013. Die Familie bekam Zuwachs and das war eine gute Gelegenheit, eine Decke zu weben (nein, ich bin (noch?) keine Oma).

My Ashford Knitter's Loom is only 30cm wide, therefore I wove four strips which I joined with a machine zickzack stitch. The stripes in warp and weft are random (might this be the beginning of "Wild Weaving"?)

Mein Ashford Knitter's Loom ist nur 30cm breit. Daher habe ich vier Streifen gewebt, die ich dann mit der Maschine zusammengenaeht habe. Die gewebten Musterstreifen sind unterschiedlich breit.

Warp and Weft are Vinni's Colours Nikkim (Cotton) in many colours. The binding is cotton fabric in matching colours.

Size: approx. 115x115 cm.

Material: Reines Baumwollgarn in vielen Farben, Die Einfassung ist Baumwollstoff.

DYEING WITH COCHENILLE

Today I dyed with cochenille for the first time. There was some disappointment caused by lack of information and some pleasant surprises:

Heute habe ich das erste Mal mit Cochenille gefaerbt. Einige Ergebnisse waren enttaeuschend, aber es gab auch angenehme Ueberraschungen

I had 500g of silk yarn that I wanted to dye a strong bright red. Well, that didn't happen - the 200g I put into the first dye lot turned out pink instead. The first dye lot also produced a very dark almost burgundy red merino which I had expected.

Ich hatte 500g Seidengarn, das ich knallrot faerben wollte. Das hat nicht geklappt. Die 200g in der ersten Faerbeflotte wurden pink. Ein Strang Merino Garn wurde dunkel burgunder rot wie erwartet.

I put another 200g of the silk into the second dye lot which produced a pale salmon colour that I didn't like at all. And a dark red Alpaca lace yarn which - and that was the pleasant surprise - brightened considerably in the final vinegar bath. After taking out the Alpaca I added some iron water (some nails left in a jar with water). This produced a powder purple/pink in the silk which I can see turning more towards mauve as it dries, and a dark mauve in another skein of merino/bamboo.

200g Seide in der 2ten Faerbeflotte wurden blass lachsfarben, was mir gar nicht gefiel. Ein Strang Alpaca Garn wurde dagegen dunkelrot und spaeter im Essigbad heller und leuchtender Rot - das war die angenehme Ueberraschung. Ich nahm das  Alpaca Garn raus und gab etwas Eisenwasser zu dem Farbbad. Nun wechselte die Seide zu einem puderigen lila/rosa das beim Trocknen zunehmend malvenfarben wild. Ein Strang Merino/Bambus wurde dunkel malvenfarben.

For the third dye lot I had only 100g of merino/bamboo left which turned a lighter shade of mauve. I could possibly have gone on to dye softer shades of powder pink/mauve but unfortunately didn't have more fibre prepared.

Fuer die dritte Faerbeflotte hatte ich nun nur noch 100g Merino/Bambus uebrig, das etwas heller wurde als in der 2ten Faerbeflotte. Ich denke, ich haette noch weiter sanftere Toene faerben koennen, hatte aber leider nicht mehr Garne vorbereitet.

Should I be able to lay my hands on some more cochenille I would like to try this again.
Sollte ich nochmals an cochenille kommen, wuerde ich es gerne nochmal probieren. 

WILD LOOP SCARF/STOLE

Another sample of wild knitting lace. This time a scarf/stole that can be closed into a loop by colourful buttons.

Dieser Schal kann zum loop geknoepft werden. Die Lochmuster sind waehrend des Strickens intuitiv entstanden und folgen keinem spezifischen Muster.

WILD SHEEP

Leaving for what was going to be a long drive I realized I hadn't packed anything to work on. I quickly grabbed two balls of yarn and a circular needle. Once on the road all I could think of was "shawl" and "stripes" and this is how this shawl started. 

Wir wollten zu einer laengeren Autofahrt aufbrechen und ich hatte noch kein Strickzeug eingepackt. Ich steckte schnell je einen Knaeuel grau und weiss und  eine Rundstricknadel ein. Das einzige was mir dann im Auto einfiel waren "Streifen" und "Tuch".

Next came a section of feather & fan pattern and after that the fair isle sheep wanted to come in. The next two lace patterns started more or less according to a pattern but then turned increasingly wild. The curved edge was emphasized by blocking.

Nach den Streifen kam ein Stueck "Pfauenmuster" und dann wollten die Schafe unbedingt eingestrickt werden. Die naechsten beiden Lochmuster fingen recht ordentlich gemaess Muster an, wurden aber nach und nach immer wilder. Bei der gewellten Kante habe ich beim Spannen nachgeholfen.

Knitted with needles 4.5mm instead of the 3.5 the yarn label asked for the shawl is soft, light and drapes nicely. Size 1.85 x 0.85 m. Yarn: Elle Elite in Chocolate (which to me looks more grey than brown and not like chocolate at all) and Stone. Weight 387g.

Statt den angegebenen 3.5mm Nadeln habe ich 4.5mm benutzt, wodurch das Tuch weich und leicht geworden ist und gut faellt. Groesse 1.85 x 0.85m, Das Garn ist ein Gemisch aus 50%Wolle/50%Baumwolle. Gewicht 387g.

WINTER BEACH

At long last this shawl got finished. I spun the yarn with the colours I see on the beach in Wilderness in winter.

Endlich ist dieser Schal fertig geworden. Ich habe das Garn in den Farben gesponnen, die der Strand in Wilderness im Winter zeigt.

The shawl is quite big - 180cm at the top and 65cm wide at the widest point.

Das Tuch ist recht gross - 180cm am oberen Rand und 65cm an der breitesten Stelle

DOGGY BAG

At the "Fibre Break Away" the Johannesburg Spinners and Weavers Guild organizes biannually I was asked to give a demonstration on two-handed Fair Isle Knitting. I found it difficult to stop with just a demonstration and made the piece into a bag. 

Waehrend der Workshop Woche, die die Johannesburg Spinners and Weavers Guild alle zwei Jahre veranstaltet, wurde ich gebeten, zwei-haendiges Norweger Stricken zu demonstrieren. Einmal angefangen, konnte ich natuerlich nicht aufhoeren, und so kam eine Tasche dabei heraus.

It got the name "doggy bag" from the dogs at the top of the bag but I don't think I will use it for food leftovers. It is, however, ideal to hold a knitting project.

Ein "doggy bag" enthaelt normalerweise Speisereste, die man fuer den Hund mitnimmt. Dafuer werde ich sie sicher nicht benutzen, aber fuer das Strickzeug sind Form und Groesse ideal. Der Name bezieht sich auf die eingestrickten Hunde.
